Back, finally Friday, August 25, 2006 Talk about a busy, ridiculous summer. Camp was nuts this year - tons of fun, but more hectic than in the past couple summers - and I've also been mired in the job search process. Not much luck on that front yet: I'm coaching cross country at my old high school, and I'm putting in application at a whole bunch of places for a full-time position. I feel like this application process is exactly like trying to get into college, except more drawn-out and perhaps slightly more important. I wasn't able to land a job teaching PE for this school year, and I think part of that is because I am not certified in health as well. I'm going to check with the state to see what it would take to get that certification, and then I might be more marketable for the future.
As far as training goes, I took about 4 weeks off after the Columbus International Duathlon (which went quite well: I finished within 90 seconds on John Hastings, a former pro national champion, while out of shape). I just started running again this past Monday, once I got myself resettled at home in Pittsburgh, and the hills and the time off immediately took their toll. I have been waking up very sore for the past week, but I think my body is slowly starting to adapt again. I expect I will have some time to jump on my bike this weekend and start putting in miles on two wheels again, as well.
Getting up to speed
No luck finding a job yet, but I certainly did find a way to exhaust myself. I have begun running with the Pittsburgh Pharaoh Hounds, a group of local elite post-collegiate runners, and today was my first speedwork since about the middle of May. We did 4 x 2000 meters pretty hard, so I am totally shelled right now. It was a really tough workout, what with the heat and my being somewhat out of shape, but I loved being with the guys and having someone to train with. I've missed having Matt as my training partner. These dudes will really help my running, especially once I'm back in good shape.
