Time flies Thursday, November 30, 2006 It's good to be running again. I'm starting to feel stronger again, despite the muscle soreness that comes with jumping back into training after an extended period of time off. I took a moderate risk yesterday by running a route up and over one fo the more serious hills close to home, but did ok all in all and didn't feel too terrible today. I took an easy cruise around the reservior this afternoon, focusing on form and biomechanics. It felt pretty good, especially with the warm weather.
I can't believe tomorrow is the beginning of December. Where does time go? I only hope the winter moves as quickly as the rest of this year already has.
First run Well, I was wrong about the madness ending. In fact, it's probably only just begun. I worked close to 50 hours last week, but I'm refusing to put in overtime this week. I think my body (and brain) might shut down if I do. I had this whole weekend off, and it was all I could do yesterday to get out of bed. Today was better, but not by much, even after 10 hours of sleep.
On the brighter side of things, I actually threw on the running shoes today for the first time in 40 days and went for a spin around the neighborhood. It's amazing how quickly one falls out of shape, and how much harder 7:30 pace becomes after an extended break. Add the mental anguish of being used to running 6:15s, and it becomes a challenging run. My legs ached all over by the end, but it did feel good to be pounding the pavement again. I am drawing up plans to s-l-o-w-l-y bring my mileage up, because I refuse to get injured again. This time, I'm going to do it right, however frustrating that might be.
Finally, the madness ends Our store is finally set up, and we're (supposedly) opening tomorrow. I've put in about 200 hours in 15 days, and was granted the day off today to recover. I'll begin my regular 5 AM shifts tomorrow, so I'm glad I get the chance to catch up on sleep. I've been completely exhausted, not to mention unable to even think about doing anything other than eat, sleep, and work. Thankfully, I'm back down to 35-40 hour weeks for the forseeable future. With holidays creeping up, that may change, but we'll see.
I plan to start training again, on a very light basis, the weekend after Thanksgiving. When I'm not feeling exhausted, I feel the urge to get out and run, so I think that my month off has served me well. I'm not sure when I'll get back on the bike, but I think I want to be in the full swing of running before I ease into cycling again, so that it's not as hard on my legs.
